Montreal’s Stonewall

This article is a look at the legacy of a brutal 1990 police raid in Montreal on an after-hours loft party called Sex Garage, populated primarily by gay men, lesbians & drag queens.  Forty police officers beat and arrested some of the party-goers and the resulting public demonstrations and outcry over further police brutality during thosee peaceful demonstrations galvanized a generation of queer activists and reshaped the gay politics and policies of Montreal as well as the rest of the province of Quebec and the entirety of Canada.  

In 2005 Canada became the first country in the Americas, and the fourth country in the world, to legalize same-sex marriage.
